STUDENT LEADERS FROM ACROSS CANADA LAUNCH  CAMPAIGN TO DEMAND ACTION TO END THE EPIDEMIC OF SEXUAL ASSAULT IN HIGH SCHOOLS NATIONWIDE

We Must End Sexual Violence in #HighSchoolToo

CANADA - We invite you to join high school and university students from across Canada to launch their national campaign #HighSchoolToo on ending sexual violence.

In recent days, high school students from across this country have been walking out of class to draw attention to institutions’ lacklustre response to sexual violence against young people. Sexual assault against high school students is not just rumours or school drama. It is a massive problem in Canada, with 1 in 7 girls saying another student has sexually assaulted them. These new walkouts draw attention to the lack of consistent, transparent stand-alone policies, education and protocols to address disclosures.

#HighSchoolToo is a student-led network in Canada that works to end sexual violence in secondary schools. While we applaud the attention and resources that have been placed on sexual violence in colleges and universities in recent years, the same attention is needed for high school students. Students deserve a safe school environment and safety is not possible when there is a lack of support and education in our high school systems. We are calling on school boards, provincial and territorial governments, political parties as well as the federal government to take action to address this epidemic and not continue to leave students vulnerable to sexual violence.
